One of the biggest revelations in my life was understanding that we are what we think. We are here because of what we have thought in the past. We will be where we are in 10 years because of what we choose to think starting from today. I am a digital marketing consultant because I chose to think and act accordingly a couple of years ago.
What I want to talk about is the power of our thoughts, the power of our beliefs. We will see that there are two types of beliefs: empowering beliefs and dis-empowering ones. And I want to highlight that it is possible to change our current beliefs.
Sometimes the problem is not physical but rather psychological. It all happens in our mind.
Beliefs are powerful; they can either help you, or destroy you. They can lift you up or tear you down. One of the best decisions in our life is to identify and be aware of our beliefs and differentiate the empowering and dis-empowering ones. Let’s make a decision and ask ourselves: “What am I thinking about right now?”; “What should I be thinking about right now?”.
A limiting belief: I would never become a digital marketing consultant
Let’s talk about limiting beliefs first. A belief is not reality; it is our perception of reality. In some cultures, they believe that when it rains, it is because God is angry, crying or even peeing. But it is just a belief. Yet, they do consider that as a fundamental truth.
Let’s take a very simple example. For this year, your goal is to become a digital marketing consultant. Unfortunately, deep down, you don’t believe you can do that. And that was exactly my case. I never had any formal education about digital marketing, SEO, SEM or SEA. You might tell yourself: “I don’t have time to learn anything new”, “I am bad at SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or I’m bad at SEM (Search Engine Marketing)”.
But those are just thoughts that become beliefs. They translate into actions. If you have those kinds of thoughts, what will be the result? You will act accordingly and will never grab any Digital Marketing books to follow your dream as a digital marketing consultant. You don’t take part in a digital event. And it becomes a vicious circle, a self-fulfilling prophecy. And even if you try once or twice, and you encounter some difficulties: you will give up very easily because deep down, you believe that you can’t become what you aspire for!
When we are convinced about something, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, it becomes a reality; our reality!
But I have good news for you! As a human, you can choose your beliefs. You can replace and update them! Just like a computer program! Your limiting beliefs might be windows XP or Windows Vista, but you can choose to use Windows 10!
How to replace limiting beliefs into empowering ones?
You see, you gain nothing –absolutely nothing- by holding limiting beliefs, but you can have everything by replacing them with empowering ones. A belief is like a table! The table is supported by 4 legs. In the same way, a belief is supported by legs, by your past experiences. If you had bad experiences in the past, a limiting belief might have formed in you. But you can replace those legs, replace them and create better experiences.
Let’s go back to our example. Your goal is to become a digital marketing specialist. You know now that limiting beliefs won’t help you so you decided to replace them. Before, you told yourself: “I will never have time to learn new skills” and now, you decided to replace that belief into “I will put the time necessary whatever it takes”. And “I can be a digital marketing consultant” is a new belief, so you have to create new legs that support this belief. You have to create successful experiences that confirm and reinforce that new belief! How can you do that concretely? You start with very small tasks, but successful tasks that confirm that you are good at SEO or SEM. Believing that you can bring more traffic and unique visits to your website.
And you create successful experiences again and again until you form a new belief.
And it’s only up to you to do so. No one is going to do your push-ups for you. It’s up to you to take roles, to sign up for the speeches because once again: “it’s possible to become a better speaker”.
We are what we think
Yes, we are what we think (a TED Video about it) and what we think becomes our reality. We’ve analyzed that there are two types of beliefs: the disempowering and empowering ones. But mostly, we’ve highlighted, underlined that we can and must replace the negative, limiting, disempowering beliefs into positive and empowering ones.
Watch your thoughts, they become words, watch your words they become actions, watch your actions they become habits, and watch your habits they become your character, watch your character, they become your destiny! What is going to be your destiny? It all starts with a thought. What is going to be your life in 10 years, in 20 years? It’s in your power to choose what to think and taking actions.
