HEALTH IS THE GREATEST GIFT

I have to tell you this: since I was kid, I was always wondering why I came to have a big and fat belly. The lack of a healthy lifestyle was a reason, but little did I know that it was also because of our staple food: rice.

In Madagascar, it is common to see people eat rice three times a day. Most of people would even feel hungry, unsatisfied if they didn’t have rice. I used to eat a lot of rice too and I still eat some. The only difference now is that I am aware of how unhealthy too much rice could be. Rice is a refined carbohydrate and is considered a high glycemic food. As soon as we take a bowl of rice, our blood sugar level raises. The insulin that regulates our sugar level is secreted and transforms the carbohydrates, now sugar into energy. When we don’t exercise, the energy is stocked under the form of fat, hence the belly fat.

My ignorance explains this lack of awareness. If we don’t know, how can we even be aware of what’s right and wrong? That was the starting point of my journey. I gathered all the books I could grab about how to lose weight, health, exercises, and fitness. My goal for 2014 was to start a healthy lifestyle: I totally failed, and here’s why.

LET'S BE MORE HEALTH CONSCIOUS

How we face the day, how we approach our daily problems are so much different when we have the right state after exercising. If I could advise my younger self about one thing, it would be to start exercise regularly as soon as possible.

THE POWER OF OUR ENVIRONMENT

Our environment shapes us and sets our standards.  What we tolerate in life and what we reject is merely a reflection of our environment.

I first experienced this when I have a roommate. The difference of culture was huge. My friend exercises at least 3 times a week, buy and cook his own meals. He just likes to plan everything in advance. I failed to understand what’s fun with so much discipline. A few months later, I started getting into his habit too, and that was the best thing that happened to me.
