Go small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing small\u201d is ignoring all the things you could do and doing what you should do. It\u2019s recognizing that not all things matter equally and finding the things that matter most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to get the most out of your work and your life is to go as small as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to be doing fewer things for more effect instead of doing more things with side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing small is a simple approach to extraordinary results, and it works. It works all the time, anywhere and on anything. Why? Because it has only one purpose\u2014to ultimately get you to the point\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/fr\/essentialism-the-disciplined-pursuit-of-less\/\">Essentialism: The disciplined pursuit of less<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/gregmckeown.com\/book\/\">Greg McKewon<\/a> presents this powerful picture<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"scattered energy\" width=\"394\" height=\"505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1-2.jpg 394w, https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1-2-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn both images the same amount of effort is exerted. In the image on the left, the energy is divided into many different activities. The result is that we have the unfulfilling experience of making a millimeter of progress in a million directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the image on the right, the energy is given to fewer activities. The result is that by investing in fewer things we have the satisfying experience of making significant progress in the things that matter most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2 THE DOMINO EFFECT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cEvery great change starts like falling dominoes.\u201d \u2014 BJ Thornton<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen one thing, the right thing, is set in motion, it can topple many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Imagine this, \u201ca single domino is capable of bringing down another domino that is actually 50 percent larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you line up a set of dominoes, each of which is 50% larger than the previous one you will observe an incredible geometric progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the 18th, you\u2019re looking at a domino that would rival the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 23rd domino would tower over the Eiffel Tower and the 31st domino would loom over Mount Everest by almost 3,000 feet. Number 57 would practically bridge the distance between the earth and the moon!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our lives, we have to find the lead domino that will have the biggest impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccess builds on success, and as this happens, over and over, you move toward the highest success possible\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you see a big muscular guy, they work out and build muscles over time. When you see someone who is a world-chess master, they develop their skills over time. When you see Warren Buffett having accumulated so much wealth, he built it over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key is over time. Success is built sequentially. It\u2019s one thing at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2-2.jpg\" alt=\"dominoes\" width=\"526\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2-2.jpg 526w, https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2-2-300x271.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3 SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt is those who concentrate on but one thing at a time who advance in this world.\u201d \u2014 Og Mandino<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtraordinarily successful companies always have one product or service they\u2019re most known for or that makes them the most money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s success is based on one single thing: search. Apple is generating billions of revenue with the IPhone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf today your company doesn\u2019t know what its ONE Thing is, then the company\u2019s ONE Thing is to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can only be one most important thing. Many things may be important, but only one can be the most important.\u201d \u2014Ross Garber<\/p>\n<h3><strong>One person<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe ONE Thing is a dominant theme that shows up in different ways. Take the concept and apply it to people, and you\u2019ll see where one person makes all the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his book, \u201cThe 21 irrefutable laws of leadership\u201d, John C. Maxwell explains how one single man led McDonald\u2019s to how it is now. If it wasn\u2019t for his leadership, McDonald\u2019s wouldn\u2019t have had such success. It\u2019s true that Dick and Maurice McDonald started the business, but their leadership was too weak. Ray Kroc is that man; he envisioned the restaurant scale up in hundreds of markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ONE Thing shows up time and again in the lives of the successful because it\u2019s a fundamental truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same principle applies for Amazon which one single focus was online book-selling. Take another example, Bill Gates. He was the richest man in the world for 15 years straight because he developed one single passion and skill: computer programming.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>One thing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe ONE Thing sits at the heart of success and is the starting point for achieving extraordinary results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How then can we live the \u201cone thing\u201d if it\u2019s at the heart of success?<\/p>\n<p>The author reveals some of the big fallacies about success. There are myths and misinformation we must be aware of. To live the one thing, we must get rid of such lies of success first.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>THE LIES THEY MISLEAD AND DERAIL US<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIt ain\u2019t what you don\u2019t know that gets you into trouble. It\u2019s what you know for sure that just ain\u2019t so.\u201d \u2014Mark Twain<\/p>\n<p>A lie repeated often enough can become a truth.<\/p>\n<p>Have you heard of the famous metaphor? \u201cToss a frog into a pot of hot water and it will jump right back out. But if you place a frog in lukewarm water and slowly raise the temperature, it will boil to death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Garry Keller, that\u2019s not true. In the same way, the explorer Cortez arriving at the Americas never burnt the ship to motivate his men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time, myths and mistruths get thrown around so often they eventually feel familiar and start to sound like the truth. Then we start basing important decisions on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, we talk about six lies between you and success in the \u201cOne thing\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PART I: THE SIX LIES BETWEEN YOU AND SUCCESS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Everything Matters Equally<\/li>\n<li>Multitasking<\/li>\n<li>A Disciplined Life<\/li>\n<li>Willpower Is Always on Will-Call<\/li>\n<li>A Balanced Life<\/li>\n<li>Big Is Bad<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4 EVERYTHING MATTERS EQUALLY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThings which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.\u201d \u2014Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/p>\n<p>Society is constantly looking for equality. Indeed, it might be a right ideal to pursue in the name of justice and human rights. But it\u2019s different in the real world of results.<\/p>\n<p>Things are never equal, \u201cThere will always be just a few things that matter more than the rest, and out of those, one will matter most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be productive, busyness isn\u2019t enough. You can be very busy pushing against the Eiffel Tower and do that for the whole day, but you won\u2019t be productive. It\u2019s crucial to identify the \u201cvital few and trivial many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAchievers [\u2026] have an eye for the essential. They pause just long enough to decide what matters and then allow what matters to drive their day\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The law of Pareto<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Richard Koch, in his book \u201cThe 80\/20 Principle\u201d shares this: \u201cThe 80\/20 Principle asserts that a minority of causes, inputs, or effort usually lead to a majority of the results, outputs, or rewards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA small amount of causes creates most of the results. Just the right input creates most of the output. Selected effort creates almost all of the rewards\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3-2-1024x387.jpg\" alt=\"The law of pareto\" width=\"720\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3-2-1024x387.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3-2-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3-2-768x290.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Extreme Pareto<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Acknowledging the 20\/80 principle, the author proposes the Extreme Pareto Law.<\/p>\n<p>Why not identify the 20% of the 20%? Selectively choosing the vital few of the vital few?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the best way to achieve what you want. Identify the most important thing amidst the other important ones and continue until it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will always be just a few things that matter more than the rest, and out of those, one will matter most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing the most important thing is always the most important thing\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As I highlighted in another article <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitrakaratsimba.com\/fr\/essentialism-the-disciplined-pursuit-of-less\/\">Essentialism: the Disciplined pursuit of less<\/a>\u201d <\/strong>by Greg McKewon, there are three laws to remember when it comes to priority setting:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Law of Pareto:<\/strong> The \u201cPareto Principle,\u201d is an idea, introduced as far back as the 1790s by Vilfredo Pareto, arguing that 20 percent of our efforts produce 80 percent of results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Law of the Vital Few: <\/strong>Developed in 1951 by Joseph Moses Juran, in his Quality-Control Handbook, one of the fathers of the quality movement expanded on this idea. His observation was that you could massively improve the quality of a product by resolving a tiny fraction of the problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The power law:<\/strong> According to the power law theory, certain efforts actually produce exponentially more results than others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5 MULTITASKING<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTo do two things at once is to do neither.\u201d \u2014Publilius Syrus<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultitasking is neither efficient nor effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can actually do two or more things at once, such as walk and talk, or chew gum and read a map; but, like computers, what we can\u2019t do is focus on two things at once. Our attention bounces back and forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do two things at once, but you can\u2019t focus effectively on two things at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearchers estimate that workers are interrupted every 11 minutes and then spend almost a third of their day recovering from these distractions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why multitasking short-circuits you:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cThere is just so much brain capability at any one time. Divide it up as much as you want, but you\u2019ll pay a price in time and effectiveness.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBounce between one activity and another and you lose time as your brain reorients to the new task. \u201c<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMultitaskers make more mistakes than non-multitaskers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6 A DISCIPLINED LIFE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the most prevalent myths of our culture: self-discipline.\u201d \u2014Leo Babauta<\/p>\n<p>A disciplined life sounds boring and dull.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who looks disciplined has developed the right habits that made her look disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccess is about doing the right thing, not about doing everything right\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve identified the right thing, \u201cwe need the habit of doing it. And we need just enough discipline to build the habit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you discipline yourself, you\u2019re essentially training yourself to act in a specific way. Stay with this long enough and it becomes routine\u2014in other words, a habit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trick to success is to choose the right habit and bring just enough discipline to establish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sixty-six days to the sweet spot<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cResearchers at the University College of London have the answer. One moment he had it, the next\u2014poof! He didn\u2019t. One day it was AWOL, the next\u2014 bang! It was at his beck and call. Willpower seemed to come and go as if it had a life of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then concluded that willpower is a finite resource that needs to be wisely managed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWillpower has a limited battery life but can be recharged with some downtime. It\u2019s a limited but renewable resource.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, without realizing it, we engage in all manner of activities that diminish our willpower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if you want to get the most out of your day, do your most important work\u2014 your ONE Thing\u2014early, before your willpower is drawn down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWillpower is always on will-call is a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8 A BALANCED LIFE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, balance is bunk. It is an unattainable pipe dream&#8230; . The quest for balance between work and life, as we\u2019ve come to think of it, isn\u2019t just a losing proposition; it\u2019s a hurtful, destructive one.\u201d \u2014Keith H. Hammonds<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA balanced life is a lie\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason we shouldn\u2019t pursue balance is that the magic never happens in the middle; magic happens at the extremes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtraordinary results demand that you set a priority and act on it. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with living in the middle is that it prevents you from making extraordinary time commitments to anything. In your effort to attend to all things, everything gets short changed and nothing gets its due.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you act on your priority, you\u2019ll automatically go out of balance, giving more time to one thing over another. The challenge then doesn\u2019t become one of not going out of balance, for in fact you must. The challenge becomes how long you stay on your priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to address your priorities outside of work, be clear about your most important work priority so you can get it done. Then go home and be clear about your priorities there so you can get back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo achieve an extraordinary result you must choose what matters most and give it all the time it demands. This requires getting extremely out of balance in relation to all other work issues\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>9 BIG IS BAD<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe are kept from our goal, not by obstacles but by a clear path to a lesser goal.\u201d \u2014Robert Brault<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been conditioned to think that big and bad are related.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Big Bad Wolf. Big Bad John. From folktales to folk songs, the suggestion that big and bad go together has been a common theme across history\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing; \u201cThinking big is essential to extraordinary results. Success requires action, and action requires thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How big you think determines the level of actions that you\u2019re willing to take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly living big will let you experience your true life and work potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let small thinking cut your life down to size. Think big, aim high, act bold. It is simple and it is transferable. It just requires the courage to take a different approach.\u201d \u2014George Anders<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Carnegie, one of the richest men who ever lived recommended one simple strategy for success. As he said: \u201cconcentrate your energy, thought and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Focusing Question is a double-duty question. It comes in two forms: big picture and small focus. One is about finding the right direction in life and the other is about finding the right action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtraordinary results come from asking the Focusing Question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>11 THE SUCCESS HABIT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSuccess is simple. Do what\u2019s right, the right way, at the right time.\u201d \u2014Arnold H. Glasow<\/p>\n<p>One of the most powerful habits you could implement is the habit of asking the Focusing question.<\/p>\n<p>This simple habit will get you the extraordinary results you\u2019ve always dreamt of.<\/p>\n<p>The key here is to stick with it long enough until it becomes a habit, set different reminders that will help you form that habit.
